Gabriel looked up at his partner who was currently straddling his hips. He reached out and placed his hands on Foster's hips. "Do you think you'll be free after work tomorrow?"
Foster titled his head. "I should be why?"
Gabriel pulled him down for a kiss. "I thought I would take you out for dinner."
Foster smiled at him. "Yeah, I think I'll be able to pencil in a dinner."
Gabriel smiled back, his hands running up Foster's shirt. "I think you will really enjoy tomorrow's dinner hopefully."
Foster leaned down and kissed him. "And why's that?"
Gabriel kissed back. "You're going to have to wait and see."
Foster sighed as Gabriel started to kiss down his neck. "I love you."
"I know, I love you too."
Foster clocked out of work the next day and headed home, completely exhausted. He opened the door to his apartment and tossed his bag on the couch, where Gabriel was sitting. "Do I need to cancel over reservations?"
"What? Oh no, don't do that I'm fine, just a little tired."
Gabriel nodded. "Dress nice."
Foster walked into their bedroom and smiled. Gabriel had already picked out a nice outfit for him. He put it on before coming back out and looking over at Gabriel. "ready?"
Gabriel nodded and grabbed their coats. Gabriel led him down to a fancy restaurant and they stepped inside. Gabriel exchanged a few words with the hostess before they were led out onto the balcony, where the tables were lit by candlelight and covered in a red cloth. The couple sat down and their orders were immediately taken.
Gabriel was pouring wine for each of them when Foster finally spoke. "This is nice Gabriel, what's the occasion?"
Gabriel laughed. "I can't take my boyfriend out for a nice dinner?"
"Well, I guess. The last time we had a nice dinner like this it was a special night. It's not my birthday or yours."
Gabriel handed him a wine glass. "Just enjoy dinner."
The food came out and they dug in, making small talk. There were few other couples around, but it didn't bother them. Gabriel reached out and took Foster's hand in his when when he had finished. "Actually, I do have a reason for taking you out tonight."
He felt like he was going to throw up.
"Excuse me." He said as casually as he could manage, pulling his hand away hesitantly.
Gabriel leaned over the restaurant’s bathroom sink, trying to remember how to breathe and failing miserably. His head was pounding, a steady ache that had only intensified over dinner. It was getting hard to even think straight.
There was no way he’d be able to go through with it.
His cell phone suddenly rang, causing him to jump and nearly drop it as he reached into his pocket. Gabriel’s hands were shaking as he answered the call.
“Well, did you do it yet?” Emma asked before he could say a word.
Gabriel tried to take a calming breath and failed miserably. “I don’t think I can.”
A sigh echoed over the phone. “Of course you can, we've been planning this all week. Stop fretting and get it over with.”
“But so many things could happen. I don’t want to ruin anything and what if he doesn’t want to? It’ll change everything.” Gabriel babbled, barely giving himself enough time to come up for air.
“How about this - if you don’t do it I’m going to tell him tomorrow.” Emma suggested, trying not to sound amused. “Now calm down, it sounds like you’re having another one of your anxiety attacks."
Gabriel looked up into the mirror and cringed at his appearance. His skin was paler than usual and there was a sheen of sweat coating his face. It wasn’t an appealing sight. “So what if I am? I’m allowed to for this, it’s important.”
Emma's voice took on a stern tone that she usually reserved for children. “No, you’re not. Now clean yourself up and go get it over with. You know he’s not going to reject you.”
“But…”
“Now, Gabriel.”
He sighed, “Fine.” With a click Gabriel hung up before Emma could say anything, there was nothing else his friend could do for him at this point. Encouragement only made things worse.
A quick wash from the bathroom sink helped tidy up his haggard appearance. Gabriel took a deep breath to calm himself before quickly walking out of the restroom. It wouldn’t do any good if he gave himself more time to dwell on what he was planning.
Foster looked up at him as he approached their table, a worried frown pasted on his face. “Are you okay? You’ve been acting weird all night.”
“I’m fine.” Gabriel assured him, sitting down in his seat and trying not to noticeably fidget. Foster wasn’t helping in the slightest, staring at him with a concerned gaze that only made the butterflies in his stomach increase.
The look of concern quickly changed to one filled with suspicion. “You don’t look fine, Gabriel. We both know you’re a horrible liar, so out with it.”
“It’s just….” Gabriel sighed, pausing for a moment to collect his scattered thoughts. Gabriel pulled something out of his pocket before getting down on one knee in front of Foster. Foster's heart started to beat faster as Gabriel opened the box to reveal a simple white band. "Marry me?"
Foster could feel the tears start to sting his eyes. "Am I dreaming? I must be dreaming. Oh God.."
Gabriel's face fell and he started to shut the box. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't…"
"No, I'm freaking out right now," Foster laughed nervously, Gabriel looked at him slightly confused. He reached out and laid a hand over Gabriel's. "Yes, Gabriel, I'll marry you. I just wasn't expecting this."
Gabriel smiled. "Oh thank God, I thought you were telling me no."
"I've been waiting for you to ask," Foster replied as Gabriel slid the ring on his finger. "This was just a little unexpected that's all."
Gabriel stood back up and kissed him softly. "I love you."
Foster kissed him back. "Love you too."
